The Gnus earned their name from a match write up in the Canvey news. One drunken slur later and news had become Gnus and the name has stuck ever since.
2008 /09 SEASON - The Canvey Island 3 rd Team (GNUs), built on the league and cup double winning team of 06/07 to have a strong season last year. Only losing to Eaton Manor in both the home and away league games, meant a second place finish for the season.
The team played at end of season in the Division 7 Merit Cup, we made the final meeting our nemesis Eaton Manor, WE WON! Winning a hard fought close game was just reward for the whole team, who had played well, even when our numbers where depleted supporting the struggling Stacks.
This season will see many of our young players secure well deserved 2nd team positions, with some pushing for 1st team recognition. The third team again will be built on a mixture of old experienced heads and young fit new comers. We have already seen some new faces at pre-season training, who will enjoy the banter and the crack of the GNUs. The Canvey spirit and friendship lives on in the 3 rd team, welcoming new players to the club. Club Captain and 3rd team skipper Kevin Hobart is a stalwart of the club – “This season the 3 rd team are looking very strong and our goal is to complete the league and cup double. We have some players coming down from the 2nds, plus a new crop of youngsters to play alongside some of the most experienced players in the club. Bring it on!”
