Canvey travelled away to Chelmsford this week, looking for a result against the second placed side in the league. In the opening exchanges there looked to be very little between the two sides. Canvey began to take control, with some excellent forward pressure and relentless rolling mauling.
This paid dividends, with the visitors taking an early lead through their pack. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful. Chelmsford replied immediately from the restart, pinning Canvey back, mounting pressure of their own, that lead to a try from the home side forwards. The conversion was added.
Canvey then missed three penalty opportunities, all of varying difficulty. Chelmsford managed to nail their one, and went into the interval 10 vs. 5 up.
The second half got under way, and the 'dog fight' in the forwards continued. Neither back divisions posed any real threat to each other, but the home side just edged it, with slightly less ball handing errors, better ball retention in contact and better kicking.
In the packs, fitness became the issue and the conditioning of Chelmsford started to tell. Another hard fought try and a conversion put Chelmsford 17 vs. 5 to the good. The Islanders never gave up, and made all three substitutions. Canvey battled hard, but again Chelmsford just had the edge on them, and their forwards barraged over for another score. The conversion again was spot on, ending in the final score 24 vs. 5.
This result leaves Chelmsford second and Canvey languishing third from bottom, with the same points as Basildon . Canvey has the hardest run in to the end of the season out of all the bottom clubs. However in all honesty, there really is not that much between all the teams in this league and anything is possible.
