1st Team Match Report - 27th January 2007
(Home against Sudbury)
Score: 15 - 19
Canvey had by far the best of this game in the first half and were left to rue a disallowed try virtually on the half time whistle. Eventually losing the game 15-19 in what was a hard and well fought contest, Canvey forwards supplied their backs with quality ball from both set and loose play, resulting in winger Stefan Lay scoring two superb trys one converted by Ben Chandler.
Sudbury realised they were playing a different canvey to the one they beat 35-10 at home, the Islanders pegged Sudbury in their own half for most of the first 40 minutes working the lineout and driving mauls to good effect.
From one driving maul Canvey drove over the Sudbury line only for the ref to deem it was not grounded and blew for half time, score 12-0.
Sudbury came out for the second half fired up and let Canvey know they would not lay down and give up. Putting pressure on from the kick they got right back into the game with an unconverted try. After 5-6 minutes of more pressure they scored another try this time converted to make it 12 all.
It was now game on with both sides playing some excellent rugby. Canvey once again took the lead with a pen from the boot of Chandler 15 - 12. The nature of the game caused a long period of injury time, it was in this time added on that Sudbury scored the winning try in what was one of the best games seen at Tewkes creek this season. A mention must go to prop John Irvine who stepped up from the seconds after some good reports.
