(Home against Basildon)
Score: 17 - 5
With both Canvey & Basildon going into this game knowing nothing less than a win would do, it was always going to be a tense game, with the wind blowing diagonally across the pitch. Canvey opted to play with the slight advantage. Canvey came out of the starting blocks from the kick off, forcing Basildon right to the try line where they conceded a penalty, kicked by Brett Smith 3-0 to Canvey.
Basildon hit back almost immediately scoring an unconverted try from what was to turn out to be one of there rare excursions into the Canvey half. Basildons big pack made canvey work hard for possession but plenty of it came only for Canvey not to make good use of it.
Half time 3-5.
The second half saw Canvey dominate both territory and possession, with Basildons pack beginning to tire a score was always on the cards, and it did courtesy of fly half Jay Bedford who split the Basildon defence to go over. Converted by Ben Chandler.
Losing prop Lloyd Miller with broken bones in his hand to be replaced by the big running Jamie Saunders, Ben Chandler coming off after a knock, on came the evergreen Jason Carter and No. 8 Nick Edwards (who worked tirelessly through out the game) coming off for John Campion. This did not break Canveys stride.
Canveys forward now started to make the hard yard more and more. From one of these it was fed out to the backs and full back Dave Dennis went in under the posts and converted his own try.
Final score 17-5
