Under 16's Match Report - 1st April 2007

(Home against Ilford Wanderers)
Score: 19 - 0

Coming from a string of defeats, Canvey arrived today fired up and ready to gain some kind of revenge against the massive losses of recent weeks, no concessions this week made all the difference.

Previously losing 15-10 against the travelling side, Canvey wanted to make up for earlier mistakes, with the wind behind them in the 1st half, the MisFits tried to regain some honour.

3/4 of the first half was drawn, both sides matching each other in most competition, Canvey did have the most impact though, making many runs at the try line, none were successful, until a 5m penalty was awarded to the home side, which Billy Gorringe gladly took and scored (unconverted).

Keiron 'Piggy' Nash came off at a very early stage of the game, complaining of a bad ankle, this brought Jamie Wallace onto the pitch.

A much better looking Canvey side managed to out scrummage their opposition on almost every feed, and the forwards worked hard together to clear out ball, Scott 'Trigger' Aplin played amazingly well at Hooker, but also made some clever runs and decisive passes.

HALF TIME 5 - 0

OFF: Jamie Wallace
ON: Andy 'Marilyn' Monroe

Starting the second half, with the wind now against them, Canvey knew that the game was not over and carried on piling pressure on their opposition.

Illford showed a much better resilience in the 2nd Half, but Canvey managed to outdo them at too many tricks and managed to string together some fine looking inter-worked back and forwards phases, both lead to tries from Alex Boyle and Shaun 'Sorry' Hulroyd respectively (both converted).

Towards the end of the game, Illford did make a few threatening attacks towards the Canvey line, evading a few tackles and making a gap, Andy Monroe performed a highly ballet-esque pirouetteto to dodge an Illford attacker and closed the game off.

Today was much unlike weeks predecessing it, the team worked well as a unit which bodes very well for the future, but Russell Lynes stood out from the crowd and really made things happen, delivering a lung shattering dump tackle one minute... and leading the charge the next, a very well deserved MoTM.

Of course...there is always work to be done, it will be interesting to see how a win affects Canvey heading into their final games.
