Under 16's Match Report - 6th January 2007

(Home against Basildon)
Score: 15 - 14

Coming into 2007 The Wildcats did not have an impressive track record, yet now with return games coming up, the Wildcats looked ready to make ammends. 21 Players showed up and gave it their all, looking to avenge the 24-5 loss earlier in the season.

With some traditional Brett Smith pre-match psyching, the Canvey lads walked onto the pitch foaming at the mouths, the match had a delayed start, but nonetheless it kicked off with Basildon not kicking 10 and a Canvey scrum.

The ball was worked about, mostly by Canvey hands and eventually Canvey were given a penalty, a quick tap by Jack 'Clementstoo' Clement led to another penalty, which Jack Chandler slotted through with ease.

Once more recieving the ball from a Basildon kick-off Canvey managed to push up, most of the ball for a good 10 minutes was contested around the half way line and into Canveys 22 Line, a few good manouvers lead to the ball moving deeper towards Basildons half.

Eventually after a series of scrums, Canvey were granted a penalty after a Basildon boy decided to come in over the top. This lead to Billy 'PrettyBoy' Marsh taking a quick tap which he then passed *gasp* to Keiron 'Pig' Nash who was able to gain a few yards until he offloaded to Billy 'Stavros' Gorringe who did likewise to Jake 'Forrest' Young who scored (Converted).

With the first half almost over and a 10 point lead, Canvey were brimming with confidence and aggression, sadly though this resulted in players from both sides getting involved in a few little spats, nothing resulted from them, but the potential was there.

Eventually Basildon were able to score a try and convert, finishing the half 10-7 to Canvey

(With the amount of players on hand, there were substituations throughout the 2nd Half)

With a new half ahead of them, The Wildcats looked slightly revitalised, with a few shuffles of position around the pitch, Canvey had a game in their hands, the next 40 minutes would make or break them.

The game was stalemated for a huge period of time, with both teams sending people forward and being halted by knock-ons and forward passes. Once more tempers seemed to flair between teams and words exchanged.

After line-outs going a stray and uncountable scrummages, a move was formed by Canvey, going though copious amounts of phases, all differing in direction and pace with almost every player handling the ball and making a move.

This move was finally finished when the ball made its way towards the left corner, clever forward play by both Luke 'SpamMan' Nicholls and Jake 'Messy' Fedelmeisi', making a break towards the Basildon line, things looked scary as Luke 'SpamMan' Nicholls was edged towards touch, luckily releasing the ball to Micheal 'Clarkie' Clarke, who with Jake 'Messy' Fedelmeisi's help went over for a try (unconverted).

Taking a 15 - 7 lead with more or less 10 minutes remaining meant that both teams had to be switched on until the final whistle, afte a few little Canvey breaks a turnover saw Canvey very deep into their own half.

After numerous scrummages and a few penalties, Basildon were really going for it, one of their attempted efforts was held up and the other was scored, a debatable try, but nonetheless a score (converted).

A minute remaining and the score seemed to favour Canvey, as the Canvey kick off found Basildon hands and Scott 'Trigger' Aplin with the help of Billy 'Stavros' Gorringe pushed the Basildon man into touch.

A triumphant roar and rather football-esque celebrations (oops!) followed with Canvey winning their 2nd of the season.

After the game in the Club House, Brett advised me to write the following:

"Since I came along, you lot have gotten alot better"

I'll let you all decide whether or not you agree with Brett !
