Under 16's Match Report - 12th November 2006
(Home against East London)
Score: 13 - 0
Game 4... The first home game for the Wildcats and they made sure it counted in a rather fierce battle between the two teams.
18 Players turned up, with 2 watching from the sidelines, The Wildcats looked impressive, all in matching kit, and all with their heads switched on.
A minute silence prior to the game, gave both teams the chance to eye-up the competition and pay respect to the people who fought for our freedom.
The Canvey Kick off sent high into the air by Jack Chandler shot the game into action, with the Canvey pack managing to get to the ball and drive their opposite numbers away well, a sequence of scrums proved that Canvey's pack had an advantage over the travelling Londoners, a break down at the put in, gifted Canvey a penalty which Jack 'Clementstoo' Clement ran in with the Londoners not 10 another penalty was awarded, and Jack Chandler approached the ball and went for the posts. (Penalty Scored)
In extremely high spirits Canvey started hammering away at the travellers until a huge stoppage in play, where a London player had damaged what appeared to be his hand and another with a huge shiner on his left cheek, with no substitutes, Canvey 'loaned' Steve 'The Feller' Thurlow to the London side.
The game proceeded with the ball majority with Canvey hands (Canvey Forwards that is ), managing to force the London side back, Canvey had a clear cut opportunity to score a try on more than one occasion, after much delay and fighting, the ball fell to the hands of Mr. Billy 'Stavros' Gorringe, who did what he does naturally, and dived over the line to make the score 8-0, much to the delight of the large supporting crowd! (unconverted)
East London managed to win the ball back a good few times, and ran forward on many occasions, but most of their attacks either resulted in a kick from hand or a turn-over ball.
The travelling side managed to get Canvey right on their own line, where they had to defend, and managed to turn the ball over and prevent the London side from scoring.
Half Time was whistled just as Canvey turned over and forced a scrum.
Substitutions: OFF: Andy, Connor Cowee, Russell Lynes
ON: Matt Gevaux, Jamie 'The Blonde One',
Steve Thurlow
The Second half started With an East London kick which was caught by Keiron 'Piggy' Nash, running the ball up field, rucks and mauls developed all over the shop, with players here there and everywhere, with the Canvey Backs starting to get some decent ball, Jake 'Forrest' Young managed to plough through a few men, before executing a beautiful front flip! , also Shaun managed to drive through with a few good runs.
Now giving the Backs more ball (just a little) Canvey made some decent territory and kept on fighting.
Some periods of the game, Canvey became a little complacent and the London side managed to get back, almost scoring a try, but luckily a last ditch tackle from Jake 'Forest' Young the player spilled the ball over the touch line, giving Canvey a 22m Drop-out.
Once more going up field and through numerous phases Canvey got deep in the London half.
Line-outs throughout the match were of a great quality, Canvey even managed to win opposition ball and created chances all over the park, and Line-outs towards to London line, caused serious problems with the travelling side.
Eventually some messy ball was cleared and Billy Marsh managed to make a break and possibly to the suprise of most... he offloaded Giving Luke Lanza the ball which he went on to score with (unconverted)
With that try Canvey had a 13-0 lead, which they managed to keep until the death, with some slight on field ruckus, including young Mr. Shaun rolling around clutching his nether regions! and a London player who just couldn't seem to gather that he had been tackled and lost the ball!
Eventually the final whistle blew and a triumphant roar shot up from the Canvey side after winning their first game of the season
Biff, Kevin Cooper, Dell Boy and Luke Smith all delivered closing statements after the match, concluding that there would be no wig, and naming Keiron 'Piggy' Nash as Man Of The Match!!!!
"The Canvey forwards got good ball, and sometimes over cooked it, leading to the backs getting cold, but eventually getting ball" More or less what Biff said after the game
