Under 16's Match Report - 22nd October 2006
(Away to Basildon)
Score: 24 - 5
Game 2 of 18 and The Wildcats looked to improve on the match against Ilford Wanderers the week before.
Narrowly getting 17 players to turn up, we set off for
Basildon.
Within minutes of the Kick-off there was pushing and shoving and Basildon managed to put Canvey on the back foot, yet the Canvey boys managed to turn the tides on Basildon, similarly to the Ilford game, the ball went from side to side every now and then.
Line-outs started to emerge as the ball was forced out or kick from a penalty and a majority of them were Canvey balls, Luke Nicholls managed to get to his position quickly enough and the movement was quite good for a move which was devised on Wednesday!
Eventually the defences were broken down and Basildon managed to run through and score a try (converted).
The play resumed and the Canvey boys gave it a good go, trying to play not only Basildon, but a rather biassed referee, countless penalties were given, with due respect, he did give a few to Canvey, yet many times he was far too complacent and gave Basildon huge oppertunities.
And when i say big opportunities, there arent many bigger than a try! A basildon man was tackled and held on the floor, yet he got up and ran to the line (converted).
Anyway, the Canvey lads were trying to make a break, with Shaun, Jake Young and Russel Lynes making decent runs, yet the tackles from Basildon were pretty good, and halted many of the Canvey backs in motion. Jack Chandler was playing a great game, great passing and a serious crunch of a tackles early on.
Jack Chandler attempted a penalty at the posts, but missed to the right.
Canvey once more tried to remain resillient, yet Basildon managed to pull of a decent move, and a player ran through a few tackles and made it towards the try line, where Billy Marsh could have made the tackle, but just didnt have the legs for the man, who got it over the line (unconverted).
That try signalled the end of the 1st half.
Jake 'Clements1' Clements was brought on with Sonny'D', to replace Andrew and Jamie 'Shrek' Swann.
The second half was only just entering its first few minutes, and Jack 'clementstoo' Clement got himself slung in the Sin Bin, for Dissent. First Yellow of the season award !!!
With 14 men, teams generally struggle, but Canvey came at the second half like a new team, fighting for the ball and showing a good amount of grit.
Pushing Basildon further upfield caused penalty after penalty until the ball got some motion, the forwards really worked at trying to make opportunities, with Luke Lanza and Billy Gorringe managing to give a few decent drives. Billy Marsh took the ball, and believe it or not, a few passes came from his hands. The Canvey ball flowed well(ish) and Billy Gorringe manged to run through Basildon and score Canveys only try (unconverted).
With the score 12 points apart Canvey tried to push back, but with 14 players, things were a little harder. Luckily, Canvey did not concede during Jack Clements Sin Bin.
As Canvey tried to fend off Basildon, they brought new legs onto the pitch and managed to get another try (unconverted).
The game was pretty rough from the start, high tackles from both sides and a few dirty moves here and there from both squads. Towards the close, things got quite heated with Canvey desperately trying to score and Basildon trying to defend, collisions happened everywhere, yet no matter how hard they tried, Canvey couldn't get that much needed try.
With the necessities out of the way, Kev and Biff brought us together for a post-match chat.
2 matches in and the play has been great, it's just the scoring now where we're lacking, bring on Upminster.
