(EDF Cup Game home against Whitstable)
Score: 22 - 7
Canvey ran out worthy winners of this tough encounter against E.D.F opponents Whitstable. Canvey opened the scoring within 4 minutes after Whitstable gave a penalty away for handling in the ruck put over the posts by John Breading.
Whitstables strong forwards denied Canvey quality ball for much of the game but what decent ball they did get Canvey made the most of. 35 minutes into the game after some excellent interplay, the ball going through 6-7 pairs of hands winger John Campion went in under the posts for a try, converted by John Breading to make it 10-0 at half time.
2 minutes into the second half Canvey were awarded another pen electing not to kick for post Canvey fed the ball to prop Jamie Saunders who went over for the try to make it 15-0. Canveys fitness now started to show resulting in the forwards driving the maul on several occasions from one of these scrum half Brett Smith went over for a try, converted by Breading.
With only 5 minutes left Whistable scored and converted a consolation try. Skipper Alex Breading said after the game "I was very proud of the grit and determination of the boys when it got physical and 3 excellent trys topped it off. All credit must go to our coaches Andy Hawes and Dick Gibbons for the work they put in over the summer, the boys are fitter and hungrier than ever !
