1st Team Match Report - 13th September 2008

(Home against Ipswich)
Score: 15 - 17

Canvey considered themselves unlucky to lose this close encounter against a team who only appeared to know one way to play, using the big forwards as a battering ram throughout the whole game.

Canvey opened the scoring only minutes into the game when skipper Alex Breading picked up from the base of a scrum and powered over for a try. From then on the game went into a pattern with Ipswich taking route one, only to be stopped by the Islanders excellent defence. From one of these tackles the ball went loose with winger Tom Dulieu and center Morgan Evans kicking on Evans won the race to the ball to score, converted by John Breading.

Virtually on half-time Ipswich scored from an untidy scrum h/t 12-5.

The second half was much the same, Canveys defence keeping out the opposition and when winning ball making good inroads. Ipswich then scored a disputed try in the corner Canvey winger Jack Gillingwater claiming he held the ball up but unfortunately the ref said it was good 12-10.

John Breading then made it 15-10 with a penalty, just as it looked as if Canvey were going to claim the honours Ipswich scored in the dying minutes of the game. Canvey spokesman Richard Smith said "when constantly hit with a battering ram something's got to give and Canveys defence eventually did another minute and the game would have been won, I am sure the boys and the coaches will take a lot of heart from this performance"
