2nd Team Match Report - 20th September 2008
Score: 39 - 12
The Stacks started of at the start of the week losing 5 players to injuries & weddings etc, then with 3 of the Stacks players been called up to the 1st team (away to Beccles) it was a hard task just to get a team out for this friendly against Westcliff. But with Canveys 3rd team opposition crying off Friday morning it meant that the Stacks could sort out a better team for Saturday.
This was always going to be a hard game up front with a big Westcliff pack, but we kept focus on the game in hand. It was a bit scrappy the first half with most of the Stacks pack taking large hits from the Westcliff forwards and with the very hot Saturday sun it was hard for the forwards to keep up with play, but our rewards were paid off with a penalty under the posts in which Steve Hassan (full back) slotted the 3 points.
Westcliff came back with a try of there own in the stacks corner but miss the conversion.
It was good ball handling skills from Liam O'Connor that saw the Stacks first try coming from the winger Nasher, and converted by Steve Hassan 10-5.
Westcliff came back with a well drilled try yet again from there forwards and put the score up to 12-10, but it was in the dying seconds that saw wing forward Aaron Sultana run a 25 meter try in the corner to put the Stacks back in the lead 15-12 at the end time for the first half.
2ND HALF
Stacks came out in the 2nd half with something to prove as they got a lecture from skipper Danny Horton about keeping up with play and filling the gaps on the defence line, well something must of worked because Westcliff did not make another point in the game but the Stacks came away with 24 more points with try's from prop Stavous,
fly half Liam O'Connor, winger Luke Sultana, and inside centre Jake 'THE YANK' Young.
Final whistle was blown with the Stacks coming away with a 39-12 win. Man of the match went to Young Prop Luke Lanza.
Skippers report:
A bit sloppy in the 1st half but came back strong in the last 20 mins of the 2nd half, but what's more important is this was a friendly against westcliff 3rds and we are playing them in 2 weeks time in a merit table.
