Under 16's Match Report - 12th October 2008
(Home against Thurrock)
Score: 14 - 7
The delay of Canvey's second game could have caused doubts over the boys possible performance against a Thurrock opposition that always give a very hard game. These were blown away by a superb first half performance by Canvey, led by each and every forward, finishing with a fluid running game from the backs.
From the first whistle, the attitude, aggression and play shown by each player was a delight to watch. It was to Thurrock's defensive credit that they limited Canvey to only one score, a converted try arriving late in to the first half.
A scrum won against the head, a loose ball picked up by James Schofield advanced forward, the ruck ball secured, a short run by Frankie Leeming , out to Matt Peters to fly past tacklers on the right wing, crossing the line, touching down under the posts. 7-0 at half time.
The second half started with Canvey looking to build on their lead, which they did from the Thurrock kick off, the ball was secured and run back by Frankie Leeming from within his own 10M line, slipping tackles and out running the defence touching down between the posts, conversion secured 14-0 .
This roused Thurrock who started to pose a greater threat, pinning Canvey in their half for long periods. They scored in the later period of the half narrowing the gap to 14-7. Thurrock looked to push on for an equalising score but Canvey started to turn defence into attack, an inspired run by Billy Slater , taken on and touched down by Jake Silk denied only by a narrow touch infringement .
All players who took part, those who started and those who came on as substitutes provided a superb display of rugby.
Many thanks to Danny for refereeing, a job few people will do with such fairness, although this is not always appreciated .
Coaches Comments
Lee Slater on spectator interference and the referee's performance “I'm running the line and I make the mark for the lineout” ; “I can confirm that Danny did get at least one decision right”
Tony on his fashion Sense “I always wear these socks and sandals combo, it'll catch on one day”
Captains Comments
“I'm more than happy with the aggression shown, although this should always be directed through the game. Ruck hard, tackle hard, play hard.”
