Under 16's Match Report - 14th September 2008

(Away to Barking)
Score: 49 - 5

A Supporters View

A very tough first game of the season saw Canvey loose 49-5, to an organised, well drilled Barking side. Although the score shows a big difference in skill, it doesn't reflect the attitude and fight shown by Canvey's team.

The first half saw Canvey defending valiantly, never giving up, as typified by the try saving tackle by No13, Harry Simister. With minimal opportunities to attack into the Barking territory, a 25-0 lead was taken into half time by the home side.

An inspirational start to the second half by Canvey, Ben Hook collected a high ball under pressure, progressing up the field via Frankie Leeming, finally to Harry Simister who crossed the line for a deserved try. The score marked the start of a 20 minute period of sustained pressure, which unfortunately was not rewarded by any further points. We came very close.

Barking scored three quick tries mid way through to second half, to finish the game off. Against a good opposition, who had plenty of skill and reserves, the Canvey players, coaches and supporters can be proud of the attitude and fight shown from the first to the final whistle.

This should set the standard to be carried forward and be built upon throughout the season. Never say die whatever the score.

Coaches Comment:

“I thought our cheer leader was inspirational” (Lee Slater)

“The only major problem we had was with the black Punto in the car park, sometimes like our boys, hard to keep them going without giving a bit of boot” (Tony Lemming) (one of the boys mothers car broke down in the car park!)
