Under 16's Match Report - 19th October 2008
(Home against Basildon)
Score: 10 - 49
Where to start? Always best from the beginning.
Going back several years, to when the teams first met, the matches were very close affairs, hard to call who would come out on top, however the last two seasons has seen Basildon raise the standard play considerably, coupled with uninterested, woeful Canvey performances, the scores have been very one sided.
The Thurrock performance the previous week was an optimistic indication, even with a few injured players, that the game would be a more even contest. By the end of the first half these thoughts were blown away by the Basildon teams' display of attacking rugby and the disappointing Canvey effort, at 0-39 many were left wondering what would be the final score. What would the second half bring, a turn around, a fight back, a show of grit and determination not to be steam rollered again and be left demoralised? Who Knew.
Well we literally got the lot. The second half could not have been more different, attitude, application and inspiration, two tries, plenty of tackles and team spirit. The tries were made from instinctive, elusive runs from deep by Matt Peters and Harry Simister , beating the spread defence to score ten points. Basildon replied to match the two scores but compared to the 0-39 first half loss a 10-10 second half score was a lot more respectful and no less than the lad's efforts deserved.
It's puzzling why the lads didn't compete in the first half as they did in the second, it may have narrowed the difference in the scores a little bit more. Perhaps this has broken the illusion of inferiority that in recent games Canvey seemed to have with Basildon.
Following a highly competitive match it was good to see both teams clapping each other off the field and to see some of the opposition enjoying an after match pint in the club house!
